Is it mandatory to have the Wikipedia template on the top of the article if we credit the authors elsewhere?

The Wikia licensing page states

If you import text under a compatible license which requires attribution, you must, in a reasonable fashion, credit the author(s). Where such credit is commonly given through page histories (such as copying within Wikia), it is sufficient to give attribution in the edit summary, which is recorded in the page history, when importing the text.

So instead of using the template could I link to the page history of said article and/or include the list of authors in the new article's discussion page (and refer to the list in the edit summary)? Example: Marlene Wallace on the Final Fantasy wiki. I want to know because last year Wikipedia had articles on each GITS episode but these were removed and the pages were redirected to 1 article with a short summary of each episode (like the one we have here), I'm thinking about importing the text of the old articles.
